All the joints of the body share basic characteristics that are subject to inflammation and pain. Each joint also has specific functions that require general, as well as specific applications of correction to reduce pain and inflammation and to restore normal function.
The first step required is to have your dentist examine your "bite". If your teeth are not aligned properly, that may be the sole cause of your problem. Usually, your dentist can readily align it.
If your "bite" alignment is correct or has been corrected, and you still have pain, discomfort or inflammation, then other modes of therapy should be instituted. Excessive clenching of the jaw (consciously or unconsciously) caused by habit or stress factors can be addressed and moderated. Chewing food with "mindfulness" can also be mastered.
Muscle and ligament imbalances may be present. Specific exercises and self-massage of muscle tension points can be learned, to balance those misalignments leading to TMJ inflammation and pain.
