A major problem for busy therapists administering "body work" is fatigue and hand, wrist (carpal tunnel syndrome), arm, shoulder, neck and back pain due to repetitive stress of those areas. I've treated many chiropractors and massage therapists who could no longer work effectively due to these chronic irritations that had begun to cause them to cancel their client's appointments.
Therapists who utilize Spinal Mobilization Techniques avoid harmful repercussions to their bodies by learning how to use balance and pressures directed with the leverage of the whole body to specific contact points in a constant fluid motion. This also avoids fixed pressures on a therapist's feet, legs, spine, hands, arms, shoulder girdle and other joint structures subject to constant wear and tear and irritation. It is also a way of exercising and toning the whole body while administering treatment. This balanced technique avoids burnout and fatigue, and most importantly, when the therapist's body is in balance and harmony during the therapeutic session, the patient will receive the highest form of care.
The spine is the core of the central nervous system. The rhythmic motion of SMT movement to the patient and the therapist also sets in motion an automatic harmony of breath coordination and motion with the practitioner and the patient. A meditative-like state often develops within both parties. This calming effect enhances the emotional -spiritual connection and adds to the overall healing capacities of the patient, as well as enhancing the practitioner's well being.
Post-treatment measurements of increased spinal range of motion, compared with the initial pre-treatment findings, will also reward the therapist with the satisfaction of a solid achievement that both patient and practitioner can validate. This naturally leads to more referrals to other patients seeking better results.
Fulfillment in your practice by using your unique skills to satisfy the needs of patients and their appreciation of your accomplishments are motivating forces that will continually propel you to achieve your professional goals.
