The word "spiritual" often has religious or esoteric connotations. To me, the word "spiritual" means – the spirit or attitude in the way that we think, feel and act; the way one expresses their unique personality essence.
Our thoughts plus our feelings, plus our actions, equal our attitude. When our thoughts, feelings and actions are aligned with our natural traits and talents to creatively express our spiritual essence and purpose in life, we experience a sense of fulfillment and joy. Our energy and health attain optimum levels to accomplish our personal and societal goals.
Many patients, who were psychiatrists or psychologists, at times, discussed their patients' or their own dilemmas with me. I did not know all the "academic labels" that used to identify psychiatric conditions, however, I was able to simplify the circumstances and used common sense with practical applications that proved successful. I acknowledged the negative aspects, as well as emphasized the positive potentials, even in the direst of circumstances, as an opportunity for change and growth to achieve greater fulfillment of one’s essence. Very often, those psychiatrists/psychologists called me their psychiatrist.
In many instances, psychological influences are crucial. However, many times, spiritual perspectives are not addressed since they fall into the realm of "unscientific". In this respect, the powers of intuition, both on the part of the doctor and patient, can play a significant role in identifying problems and solutions in non-traditional, but very significant ways. In a holistic practice, all aspects of an individual’s spiritual personality and beliefs must be considered and addressed.
There are many common spiritual characteristics that course through all cultures and times. These factors help to complete an expanded holistic understanding of our human beliefs, our drives and our relationships with others. These understandings are incorporated into evaluating one’s nature and help chart a practical path to resolving conflicts and achieving greater fulfillment.
