Realizations and Commitment

In the 1970's when I had embraced holistic studies and applications in my practice, I was deeply taken by the concept and powerful potential of treating the whole person. A "whole person" to me means that each of us possesses an emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual dimension that profoundly affects our health.

In simple terms, we are composed of a heart, mind, body and a unique spiritual personality. These vital parts are integrated with each other. To the degree that one part is out of balance and not in harmony with our other parts, we feel ill at ease, or in a state of disease.

My "A-ha!" moment came to me as I stood in a country field mesmerized by the sight of a glorious rainbow. The rainbow is created by a beam of light that is bent by the prism-like drops of water causing the light wave to stretch out in a fashion that displays different bands of colors. Each brilliant color is unique from the other colors, yet all the colors are in splendid balance and harmony with each other creating a magnificent full-spectrum rainbow.

To me, that rainbow symbolized the essence of a holistic viewpoint. When the full spectrum of our hearts, minds, bodies and spiritual essences are in balance and harmony, we radiate health and wholeness. In nature, when we see a vibrant healthy plant, or a magnificently healthy animal, we readily appreciate its beauty. That sense of "beauty" is not merely an assembly of its parts in order to look nice, it is the radiation of wholeness and health – the superb balance and harmony of its inner essence radiating outward that we interpret as "beauty".

I see beautiful colors that represent the traits and feelings within people. I know that when those aspects are brought into balance and harmony, then, like a rainbow, a person will dazzle and glow and will look, feel and be radiantly healthy. They will emit a natural beauty from within.

After I had delved deeper into the full spectrum of holistic studies, I became imbued with the concept of the rainbow as a metaphor symbolizing the whole person's spectrum (of heart, mind, body and soul) in balance and harmony, within themselves and with their environment. As a statement of personal philosophy and sincere dedication to achieving the goal of health and wholeness for my patients, I changed my name to Rainbow.

That was a time prior to the "gay rights movement's" popular association to the rainbow, and does not reflect my association with any group, cult or organization. I have never met another person with the name Rainbow. I have never been a "hippie". At that time (1960-70's) I wore three piece suits and ties, was married with children and had a professional practice in a conservative community. My only affiliation to the name Rainbow is my humble appreciation of nature's beautiful colors in harmony created by the gift of light and water as a symbol of hope.

My sense of purpose and mission has propelled me to continue my holistic studies and applications for over four decades by using natural, safe and practical means to achieve balance and harmony, health and wholeness that fulfill the needs of my patients.

The name Sage was given to me by my wife after twelve years of marriage. I view the name in the context that the Native American herb is used for cleansing, purification and healing purposes.

"Sage" also represents wisdom. However, I know from the daily mistakes that I make, I am not a sage. I have come to realize that wisdom is a life-long goal that one strives to attain, yet, even in one's last breaths of life, there is always more that can be learned. The greatest insight to wisdom that I have come to respect and admire has been what I have learned from each patient's experiences of life. For that, I am thankful and look forward to learning more about the wonder of our human uniqueness from those whom I will meet in the future.
